Heart of palm is a vegetable harvested from the core of the palm tree. It was and still is considered a delicacy since harvesting in the wild and cutting it is very labor intensive and costly. It was not without reason that a salad with hearts of palm was called a millionaire’s salad. Fortunately, there are now varieties that can be grown on farms.
Its delicate flavor and crunchy texture pair well with seafood and greens. They are often sliced raw onto salads. However, we urge you to think beyond only adding it to salads as they can also be roasted, pan fried, baked, grilled or braised.
The texture makes it a great substitution for seafood in dishes such as ceviche, fish taco’s or burritos. It’s called the lobster of vegetables for crying out loud! There are so good that you’ll swear you hear the waves hitting the shore.
Other applications include slicing and adding it to grains, pastas and fresh salsas. Top pizza with thin slices. Stuff or fill hollow cavity with cheeses, meats or herbs. Add to stews, chowders, quiche and casseroles.
As if that wasn’t enough, hearts of palm are low in calories and cholesterol free. They also provide a good source of vitamins such as zinc, potassium, and vitamin C. With such an exotic addition to your dish, you will make a substantial contribution to your daily portion of vegetables.
For preparation, boil in salted water until the tip of a knife can be inserted into the hearts of palm. Grilling will only take a couple of minutes per side.
