A portobello is the full-grown version of a chestnut mushroom, with the cap fully open. They are very popular among chefs because of their dense, meat-like texture and rich, earthy flavor. Not to mention, the shape and size of the portobello brings a lot of versatility to the table.
Portobello mushrooms can be grilled and used as burger buns to make a keto-friendly burger or hollowed out and used as a pizza crust or bowl for other fillings. It’s a great way to include less carbs, more nutritional value and more umami flavor in your meals.
For preparation, clean with kitchen paper, but don’t put it in water as it will be absorbed by the mushroom resulting in less flavor. Then these mushrooms can be sliced into salads, chopped and mixed into soups and stews, baked into pasta or rice dishes or chopped and cooked in an omelet. The possibilities are endless!
